This is the story of a painter little known in the world. The Spanish artist was called Fernando Labrada, born in Malaga in 1888, therefore a fellow citizen and almost the same age as Picasso. However, an enormous pictorial talent with the destiny of experiencing a moment in which painting so well executed not precisely aligned with the times. Labrada became director of the Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid.
He came to Italy, directed the Spanish Academy in Rome, studied our great masters, and practiced painting with his skill and refined sensitivity. • The painting refers to the English Pre-Raphaelite painting, the one of which Ruskin theorized the stylistic traces, that is a technically perfect painting, integrated with the environment and the medieval nature, before the style of beauty and purity of Raphael who accused of having produced a painting scheme that had blocked the evolution of art in the Academies until the end of the nineteenth century.
The painting at the San Fernando Academy museum in Madrid, where it exhibited. You can see the reflections of the glass that protects the work. Unfortunately, it was not possible to avoid it.
• I showed the picture on another occasion, and someone said: "what an ugly woman", a horrible, sexist comment that speaks for itself. the attractiveness of the subject does not judge painting half of the portraits of the history of art would not exist. specifically, it is possible to perceive in this work the transport with which the author offers us his narration in tender within a deep feeling of love that bound him to his wife, Antonia.
Labrada, a painter of enormous technical skill, paints her as if she were a fifteenth-century lady, adorned with jewels painted with incredible Flemish precision, in an environment brought to every detail with intense care. Labrada communicates the feelings for his woman in the attention he pays to every detail present in the portrait, aimed at enhancing his figure and personality that he loved so much. • The painting is incredibly small (I invite you to enlarge the image to admire its details, the veil, the reflections of the jewelry, the reflections of lights on the hair), almost a miniature. This amplifies admiration for its ability. Labrada never separated from this portrait which arrived at the San Fernando Academy after the painter's disappearance. A delicate gesture of love sung with the poetry of his painting. (A.R.)
